6, 2002 ] Since December 1, 2002, Tongliao City ( former
Jirim Aimag --- translator ) has launched a complete
prohibition of livestock herding to successfully end the
traditional livestock herding production mode which had been
maintained for hundreds of thousands of years. Tongliao City
has a total area of 4346 Mu ( almost 390 hectares ---
translator ) pasture lands, and a total amount of 3.2 million
head livestock. Because of the extensive grazing management
style of the traditional animal husbandry, the grassland
eco-system in this area has seriously been destroyed. After
the complete prohibition of livestock, 3954 Mu ( almost 264
hectares--- translator ) of the city’s pasture land will be
effectively protected, and the protection area will reach 80%
of the total pasture land area. The entire city’s 138 Sumus (
townships, towns ) and 2,697 Gachaas ( villages ) that are
home to 438,500 herders and farmers’ households will gradually
adopt intensive farming and animal husbandry production modes.
