Inner Mongolia, July 06, SinoCast - A June 26 report from the local environmental protection agency reveals that the volatile hydroxybenzene contaminant in Wulate Front Banner reach of the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is over 100 times higher than the national standard, the most serious pollution in the past fifty years.

It was reported on the morning of June 29 that the water there blackened, white foam flowing on the surface, stink and smelly. Dead fishes can be seen anywhere along the polluted stream. The chemical oxygen demand was 200ml per liter of water, 15 times of the national standard. Moreover, sulfureted hydrogen content was 11 times higher.

An initial analysis indicated that the pollution was due to the industrial wastewater emitted from three paper mills and one chemical plant and the irrigation water refluence in the region nearby. The concerned departments are working for pollution control and safe water supply.
